This workshop invites participants to delve into tonal exploration in copper-plate etching through traditional aquatint techniques. Simple, foundational exercises in tonal drawing—rooted in sfumato and chiaroscuro—will provide the basis for practicing a full value range using step-bite aquatint. Participants will further experiment with a reductive technique, working from a deeply etched surface and employing burnishing methods to reveal mid-tones and highlights in a manner similar to mezzotint. Additional instruction will be provided on wiping and printing techniques to achieve beautifully nuanced, gradual tonal impressions.
Participants are responsible for the materials on the Supply List.
